What Is a Light-Year? (And How Far Is It Really?)

A light-year isn't a measure of time — it's a distance so vast it redefines how we think about space. Here's exactly how far a light-year is, in kilometres you can picture.

A Measure of Distance, Not Time

Despite the word "year" in its name, a light-year is a unit of distance, not time. It measures how far light travels in one full year through the vacuum of space. Because light is the fastest thing in the universe — moving at almost exactly 299,792 kilometres per second — it covers an almost unimaginable distance over twelve months.

In a single second, light could circle the Earth 7.5 times. Now let it keep going for an entire year without stopping.

The Number Itself

One light-year equals approximately 9.46 trillion kilometres (about 5.88 trillion miles). Written out, that's roughly 9,460,000,000,000 km. To build up to it: light travels about 300,000 km each second, 18 million km each minute, and over one billion km each hour. Multiply that across every hour of every day for a year, and you arrive at nearly 9.5 trillion kilometres.

For comparison, the distance from the Earth to the Sun — already hard to picture at 150 million km — is only about 8.3 light-minutes. The entire width of our solar system, out to the edge of the Kuiper Belt, is still a small fraction of a single light-year.

Why Astronomers Need It

Ordinary units like kilometres become unwieldy at cosmic scales. The nearest star to the Sun, Proxima Centauri, sits about 4.25 light-years away — roughly 40 trillion km. Our Milky Way galaxy spans about 100,000 light-years from edge to edge, and the nearest large galaxy, Andromeda, lies 2.5 million light-years distant.

The light-year also gives us a kind of time machine. When you look at Andromeda, you're seeing light that left it 2.5 million years ago — the galaxy as it was long before modern humans existed. The farther out we look, the further back in time we see.
