The Sun sits about 150 million kilometres away — a distance so useful that astronomers turned it into their own ruler: the astronomical unit.
The Average Distance
The Earth orbits the Sun at an average distance of about 150 million kilometres (roughly 93 million miles). This distance is so fundamental to astronomy that it has its own name: the astronomical unit, or AU. One AU is defined as almost exactly 149,597,871 km.
It's Not a Fixed Number
Earth's orbit isn't a perfect circle — it's a slight ellipse. That means our distance from the Sun changes over the year. At its closest point, called perihelion (early January), Earth sits about 147 million km from the Sun. At its farthest, aphelion (early July), the distance stretches to about 152 million km.
Counterintuitively, the Northern Hemisphere's summer happens when Earth is farthest from the Sun. Seasons are driven by the tilt of Earth's axis, not by our distance from the Sun.
How Long Does Sunlight Take to Reach Us?
Light from the Sun travels at about 300,000 km per second, yet even at that speed it takes roughly 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach Earth. In other words, when you look at the Sun (safely, never directly), you're seeing it as it was over eight minutes ago. If the Sun somehow vanished, we wouldn't know for more than eight minutes.
The AU as a Cosmic Ruler
The astronomical unit makes distances across the solar system manageable. Mars orbits at about 1.5 AU, Jupiter at 5.2 AU, and Neptune way out at 30 AU. The edge of the Kuiper Belt lies around 50 AU, and the distant boundary of the Sun's influence stretches thousands of AU further still.
Beyond the solar system, even the AU becomes too small, and astronomers switch to light-years — where a single light-year equals about 63,000 AU.
