The Cosmic Horizon

The observable universe spans approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter. This might seem paradoxical since the universe is only about 13.8 billion years old, but the expansion of space itself stretches the distances between objects far beyond what light alone could traverse. The most distant light we can detect left its source over 13 billion years ago, but that source has since moved much farther away due to the accelerating expansion of spacetime.

What Lies Within

Within this vast sphere, astronomers estimate there are roughly 2 trillion galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars. Our own Milky Way galaxy, home to over 200 billion stars, is just one among this enormous population. The sheer number of stars in the observable universe is estimated at around 200 sextillion (2 x 10^23), a number so large it exceeds the grains of sand on every beach on Earth.

Beyond the Edge

What lies beyond the observable universe remains one of the deepest mysteries in cosmology. The cosmic microwave background radiation, the afterglow of the Big Bang, marks the farthest boundary we can observe. Beyond this edge, space almost certainly continues, potentially infinitely. Some theoretical models suggest the total universe could be 250 times larger than what we can see, or even infinite in extent. The limitation is not the size of the universe but the finite speed of light and the finite age of the cosmos.
